Proposed Improvements

The Elementary School flooring & plumbing are original to the building and are in need of repair and replacement. The recommendation is to permanently seal and install new flooring. The old tiles are sealed and checked every year to ensure safety.

All of the plumbing in the elementary is original. Sewer drain lines are beginning to collapse under the floor. Leaks and clogging are consistent problems, causing slick and unsanitary conditions. Sink drain pipes have been extended more than 15 feet to a clean out drain on the opposite side of the boy’s restroom. Drinking fountains are outdated.

Due to unplanned repairs, students are regularly required to use restroom facilities in other parts of campus, resulting in decreased classroom time.

SAFETY ISSUE: Ballfield Facility

Most of the poles, lights and wiring are original equipment.

Excessive rot has resulted in the tops of several poles being cut off and lights remounted. One light pole has fallen in the outfield and was replaced.

SECURITY ISSUE: "Bus Barn" Structure

The current “bus barn” leaks and is not large enough to accommodate new style bus sizes.

Recommend new structure to be located behind school. New structure which will enhance security, improve the entrance to the school and allow for parking lot renovation and expansion, improving the flow of traffic.

SAFETY ISSUE: Raymond Parks Gym

The Raymond Parks Gym (aka The “New” Gym) is the most used room in the Silex R-1 School District. It is used by every student and many guests. The floor is original, from 1965.

Although the building itself is structurally sound and is not in need of repair, the gym floor has warped over the years (especially in the southwest corner) resulting in numerous issues with nails popping up from beneath the floor. Temporary repairs are continually made to fix the unsafe conditions so that the gym can be used during physical education and other activities.

SECURITY ISSUE: Office Location

Recommendation to move elementary and high school offices to the front doors and upgrade the fire alarm in high school (current fire alarm system is a pull system only with no smoke detectors).

Office relocation will ensure all guests enter through offices.
